Over the last few years, there has been a rush to develop technologies targeted at enabling autonomous vehicles, yet almost every company in the industry is still retrofitting legacy vehicle platforms and many are no closer to having a finished product.

At Faction, we’re on a mission to right-size transportation by making fleets of vehicles driverless that are built to scale. We accomplish this by partnering with OEMs and our business partners.

Join us if you are passionate about solving one of today’s most complex engineering challenges that makes a positive impact in the world.

The Role

The Senior Controls and Systems Electrical Engineer on the Vehicle Drive-by-Wire team is an expert in “by-wire” or Steer/Accelerate/Brake-by-wire systems with experience in both hardware and software, and will drive the development of a safe system associated with by-wire technologies. You will work on system design, vehicle integration, testing, and validation, including the integration of in-house developed components and supplier components. You will use your knowledge and experience to strengthen hardware and software capabilities that connect and integrate the Faction Drive-by-wire system into existing, and new, vehicle platforms.

This role is onsite at our South San Francisco, CA office!

What You’ll Do:

  • Use your knowledge and experience to develop hardware and software capabilities that integrate Faction’s drive-by-wire system into partner vehicles to control steering, throttle, braking, and body control modules
  • Work on system design, testing, and validation, including the development prototype vehicle components
  • Ensure vehicle systems are robust and functional; perform analysis including FMEA before design releases
  • Build and document test procedures, improve the vehicle hardware platform, and ensure system safety
  • Understand and apply automotive best practices, regulations, and compliance requirements in the design
  • Prototype and test drive-by-wire components including actuators and sensor components on the target vehicles
  • Assist hardware-in-loop testing as well as structural integrity testing on components
  • Troubleshoot basic electrical circuits and electromechanical systems
  • Work in cross-functional teams to design, develop, build, and test self-driving vehicles

What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering or a related, relevant discipline
  • 4+ years of work experience in designing for automotive, mobile, or robotics use-cases; you have designed components, worked on and/or maintained vehicles, including sensor selection and integration considerations
  • Software experience with fault tolerant modular designs in C++ and C
  • Strong hands-on experience and mechanical aptitude (i.e. not afraid of using a soldering iron and building prototype components 😉)
  • Programming or scripting experience in automating workflows (macros, data analysis, firmware deployment and OTA etc.)
  • Experience documenting schematics, electrical troubleshooting, and drafting experience
  • Design background within a safety architecture

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Experience with embedded system design, and working with hardware/sensor integration, such as: radars, cameras, and GPS
  • Track record of taking products to production
  • Experience interfacing with CAN based systems and logs using tools such as UML, EA, CANalyzer, CANape, etc.
  • Experience with ISO 26262 compliant embedded C and relative toolchain(s)
  • Passion and interest for autonomous driving
  • Track driving experience (HPDE or racing)
  • Vehicle enthusiast
